Earlier this year online gambling legislation was proposed in the House of Representatives by R-VA, Bob Goodlatte.

On May 25th a House panel voted to move the bill along 25-11. The bill, H.R. 4777, would amend the 1961 Federal Wire Wager Act to be more explicit. It is current vague and considered a gray area thanks to technological advances since then. The new language would not only bring the law up to today's technological standards, but it would be written in less specific language so it can withstand the advances of time.

If brought into law, H.R. 4777 would make all online gambling illegal for United States citizens. It would also make the transferring of funds for such activities illegal as well. Authorities would have the power to block transmissions and increase penalties for violation of the law. The law seeks to tighten the governments' grip on the activities of its citizens, which is contrary to the liberal laws passed in Europe on the same matters.

H.R. 4777 online casino and online gambling bill is expected to go to a floor vote in the House of Representatives later this year. If it passes, it needs to go through the Senate and then get the signature of the President to become law. There's still a long process for this legislation. Many feel it will die a slow death do to the lack of deep support from politicians. On the flip side, many major American casino oriented companies are beginning to lobby Congress for legalizing online gambling with taxation and regulation. These companies realize that online casino gambling is unlikely to stop and they don't want to lose gambling revenue to overseas websites.

According to the recent big Wall Street Journal Poll, 85% of those polled in USA were against a Congressional ban on online casino Gambling.
